The International Graduate Program on Environmental Science and Infrastructure Engineering at Saitama University offers highly qualified overseas students the opportunity to pursue doctoral study and research in related fields of the following courses:

The program starts either in April or October and requires a minimum residency of three years for a Degree of Ph. D./Doctor of Engineering/Doctor of Science. Class instruction, research supervision and guidance are conducted in English; while dissertations, reports, examinations and presentations by students also can be given in English.

The program quota of students is 36, and 15 of them are awarded to the full support scholarship from the Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Government of Japan: MEXT) in this program. The selection of the applicants seeking admission with and without the scholarship is carried out in the below-mentioned schedule. The program which starts in April is for the students seeking admission without the scholarship, and the program which starts in October is for the students seeking admission with and without the scholarship.

NOTE: An applicant who resides in Japan at the time of application should enroll under the regular doctoral program of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, of which the admission procedures are different from this International Graduate Program on Environmental Science and Infrastructure Engineering. However, international students admitted through the regular program will be entitled to full facilities described above as the constituencies of this program. Such candidates, who seek admission under the regular program, are advised to contact the Graduate School directly for further details. Please note that the deadlines for the regular program are different from that of those given on this form.

[A] Applicants seeking admission with Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship
A1. Qualifications

An applicant must have the following qualifications:

If admitted, the applicant must be able to come to Saitama University by October 7, 2008.

A2. Selection Criteria and Procedure

Evaluation of applications will be based on the candidates' scholastic ability and research potential assessed from previous credentials, recommendation letters and the essays on selected topics. Short-listed candidates will then be invited to face an internet-based interview conducted by a panel of three faculty members at a pre-determined time schedule. The details of this interview will be sent out to short-listed candidates. The final selection is made based on the performance at the interview. The list of candidates nominated for the scholarship is then recommended to the MEXT for final approval.

A6. Scholarship and Financial Assistance

The selection process is highly competitive and the program admits only a limited number of students each year. Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarships are available for about 15 highly qualified students each year. The Scholarship provides a monthly allowance of about 170,000 yen (please note that the monthly allowance will be reduced to 160,000 yen after 13 months since the scholars came to Japan) granted initially for one and a half years extendable up to three years based on the satisfactory performance of the student, and a round-ticket to the awardee's home country. Application, tuition and admission fees are waived for students with Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship.

Applicants who pass the selection without Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship must either be self-supported or obtain other scholarships, financial assistance or financial grants from different sources to be admitted to the program. Self-supported students can apply scholarships available from different sources after enrollment.

The scholarships are available for only highly qualified students each year. Therefore, the selection is highly competitive. Evaluation of applications will be based on the candidates' scholastic ability and research potential assessed from previous credentials, recommendation letters and the essays of research plan on selected topics. Short-listed candidates will then be invited to face an Internet-based interview conducted by a panel of three faculty members at a pre-determined time schedule. The details of this interview will be sent out to short-listed candidates. The final selection is made based on the performance at the interview. The selected candidates will also be asked to fill in and submit some application forms required by the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Government of Japan). The list of candidates nominated for the scholarship is then recommended to the MEXT for final approval.
